
I keep a notepad of new terms that crop up when reading the source text literature in my field to add to my glossaries at a later date. You can maintain glossaries on-the-fly while translating (select text, right click, add to glossary) or separately as its own 'admin' task. In that regard I often add extremely common terms to the glossaries (also called termbases) simply to save typing time. The term recognition features will detect the term in the source and (in the case of Trados at least) you should only have to type the first couple of characters to enter it into your target text. The ability to build your own glossaries over time is such a benefit to your productivity. Term recognition: in my opinion this is one of the most underrated features of an all-in-one CAT tool. I could write an essay about the features and benefits of the different software, but I'll try to keep this general to all CAT tools and to address some of the points you mentioned in your post (possibly not in order).

If it's taking you longer to produce translations with CAT than your normal method, then why change? On the other hand, CAT packages are fairly complex and it would be unfair to expect to be able to just jump in without any kind of learning curve before you can reap the full benefit.

First of all, the main point to remember is that CAT tools are just that, tools intended to increase your productivity. I don't have experience with OmegaT, but I assume most of the general features are included. I've basically been translating directly in MS Word for a decade and would love to hear some tips about saving time and automating some of the work. I'm sure as I get better with the software, it will become more useful, but I'd love some input with some of the more "modern" translators out there. Also, its memory function doesn't seem to be set up to analyze stuff that I translated without it. There seems to be some promise in there, but it seems to be a bit messy when it comes to dividing up segments, and I find it a pain to deal with all the tags.

When the changes are small, I can do "merge compare" on MS Word, but when there are only a few paragraphs from the previous essay, they've been slightly altered, and show up in a different place or order than they did the last time, merge compare gets so messy that it doesn't really save me any time over manual searching. There are several artists and curators that I work with a lot over the years, and many of their essays will be iterations of previous essays, or will draw from stuff I've translated before. I know I can always build a cheat sheet or a spreadsheet, but is there an automated way to do this?
